Biography

Frederic Goodwin was first encouraged to study music as a boy at the King's School, Macclesfield (1953-60), by the then Director of Music, Patrick Salisbury.  He read music at St Peter's College, Oxford, where his main tutors were Bernard Rose and Frederick Sternfeld;   he also studied composition with Edmund Rubbra.     In addition to his academic studies, he learned the organ with John Webster, sang at daily evensong in Magdalen College Choir, and performed as a countertenor soloist at many concerts within the university.   He was a founder-member of the Clerkes of Oxenford, the choir which (under its director David Wulstan) pioneered the authentic performance of 16th century church music, using sopranos in place of boy trebles.

Frederic's main career was as a teacher in the independent sector, notably at Stamford School, Lincolnshire (1966-72), and as Director of Music at the John Lyon School, Harrow (1972-95).    Whilst at Stamford he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, having prepared himself for the examination, which he passed at the first attempt with ample margins in both sections.   At John Lyon he developed his life-long enthusiasm for the education of young musicians by being engaged in a wide range of musical activity:   teaching music to 'A' level and beyond, recruiting and organising a team of instrument teachers, conducting the School Choir in large-scale choral works with orchestra, touring Europe with the smaller Motet Choir, and teaching individual organ and singing pupils, many of whom have gone on to become successful professional musicians.

Alongside his work at the John Lyon School, Frederic was Organist and Choirmaster at St Mary's Parish and Borough Church, Harrow on the Hill, where he trained a number of young organ scholars to a high level in the full range of church-music skills.    In 1996 he moved to Louth, Lincolnshire, to become Organist and Choirmaster at St James's Church.   Retiring from this in 2009, he has continued to teach the organ, singing, piano and academic music, as well as working as a composer, conductor and accompanist.

Frederic Goodwin has obtained a CRB Enhanced Disclosure through the Incorporated Society of Musicians (issue date 13/06/2012).
